Meet Ariel*, a 38-year old single parent. He considers the streets of Manila as home for him and his two sons. They used to rent a small place but the monthly rent of Php 1,500 has become too much for him. Working as a scavenger, his daily income of around Php 150 to 200 can only cover the basic needs of his small family. Every week, they would go St. Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center in Tayuman to avail of services such as free shower, meals, and counselling.
Edwin and his two sons are among the hundreds of homeless individuals being served on a weekly basis by Kalinga Center. The St. Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center, guided by its mission of “recreating and empowering lives”, “seeks to serve the poorest of the poor, homeless and marginalized.” It was inaugurated by his eminence Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on July 16, 2015.
To provide more services for the homeless in Manila, Project PEARLS will be partnering with Kalinga Center to launch our newest project – the Pop-up Bayanihan Village. True to the spirit of bayanihan, different organizations and individuals will come together to provide various services such as: medical and dental check-ups, grooming (showers and haircut), counseling, clothing and footwear, job placement assistance, and the like. This “Outside the Box” hospitality program and one-stop shop will happen on November 30, 2019, in Kalinga Center, 1916 Tayuman Street, Sta. Cruz, Manila.
As we commemorate the bravery and heroism of Andres Bonifacio on November 30, we hope that YOU can be one of our bayani (heroes) to make this possible. We are in need of Php 50,000 to cover the hygiene kits:
- Fund Needed: Php 50,000 (Php 166.50 per person)
- Target number: 300 hygiene kits
- What are in the hygiene kits? Hairbrush or comb, toothpaste and toothbrush, soap, shampoo, deodorant, baby powder, face towel)
The Pop-up Bayanihan Village seeks to bring hope and improve the well-being of the homeless. By igniting the Bayanihan spirit among individuals, nonprofit groups, and the private sector, we also aim to start a greater conversation and collaboration that will ultimately help the homeless to get out of the streets and to have a brighter future for them.
If you are interested to donate, volunteer and/or be a Bayanihan partner, send us an email at bayanihan@projectpearls.org
