Deaf Rights and Welfare Ambassador
Background
Sign Language Interpreters of Davao Region (SLIDAR) aims to provide quality FSL (Filipino Sign Language) interpretation services that facilitate effective communication between the Deaf community and the hearing population. Our goal is to develop a pool of competent and certified FSL interpreters in Davao Region. As a volunteer with SLIDAR, you can contribute to spreading Deaf advocacy, becoming a Deaf Ally, and gaining knowledge about the Language and Culture of the Deaf. Project/Position Title: Deaf Rights and Welfare Ambassador
Scope Statement: As a Deaf Rights and Welfare Ambassador, your task will be to represent the interests and advocate for the rights and welfare of the Deaf community. You will actively engage in awareness campaigns, social initiatives, and policy advocacy to address the unique needs and challenges faced by Deaf individuals. By serving as an ambassador, you will contribute to creating positive change and improving the overall quality of life for the Deaf community.
Role and Responsibilities: As a Deaf Rights and Welfare Ambassador, your responsibilities will include:
- Advocating for the rights and welfare of Deaf individuals
- Raising awareness about Deaf culture, communication, and the importance of accessibility,
- Collaborating with organizations, communities, and policymakers to develop and implement initiatives that address the specific needs of the Deaf community
- Participating in social campaigns and events to promote inclusivity and equality
- Providing support and guidance to Deaf individuals, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected
Duration: Flexible (Based on availability and ongoing advocacy efforts)
Skills and Experience: To succeed in this role, you should have:
- Strong advocacy skills and a passion for promoting the rights and welfare of marginalized communities
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey the importance of Deaf rights and welfare
- Knowledge or willingness to learn about Deaf culture, sign language, and communication methods
- Ability to collaborate and build partnerships with diverse stakeholders
- Previous experience in advocacy, community engagement, or related fields is a plus but not required
Availability:
This volunteer opportunity offers flexibility in terms of working hours and ongoing advocacy efforts. We appreciate any amount of time you can dedicate to this role, and we can work around your schedule to ensure a meaningful contribution.
Orientation Date: June 15 (google meet link will be emailed prior to the orientation date)
On June 15, we will conduct a virtual orientation for all volunteers. During this orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet the SLIDAR team, learn more about our organization, and receive detailed information about your role as a Deaf Rights and Welfare Ambassador. It will also be a chance to address any questions or concerns you may have.
