What’s our goal?
Our main goal in MEM is to transform Mindanao through media education. According to the 2021 SWS Survey, a majority or 51% of Filipinos find it difficult to spot fake news on television, radio, or social media. This gap should be addressed by the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) teachers in Senior High School but even they need a lot of capacity development. In this regard, MEM aims to provide in-depth training for teachers and to produce IEC (information, education, communication) materials for the public audience online.
Why do we need volunteers?
To reach our goals, we need more future leaders who will champion media literacy in Mindanao. There is an increasing need to create more educational content for the public as social media gets more cluttered and congested with inappropriate content and all sorts of disinformation. Volunteers will also provide us with fresh perspectives on the best way to educate the public. While we already have professional teachers and practitioners as paying members in our organization, we still lack presence and impact in some regions in Mindanao.
What’s in it for you?
Aside from being able to help bridge the media literacy gap and increase voter literacy for the next elections, especially in conflict and information-barren areas in Mindanao, as a volunteer, you will experience close mentorship from seasoned practitioners in our organization through MEM’s Volunteer Engagement & Recruitment System for Empowerment (MEMverse) Program. You will receive a certificate of internship signed by MEM and ForumZFD, an international NGO, which you can include in your resume, and you may even request a recommendation for your future job or scholarship applications.
