***UPDATE AS OF MAY 29, 2018***
If you will be volunteering as a group of relatives, friends or colleagues, please have every volunteer in your group click the green "Volunteer" button. This is to properly account for the expected turnout on the day of the clean-up. Alternatively, every volunteer may click "Going" on our Facebook event post:

Manila Bayside Clean-Up is back and we need you to make it more successful than the first!

Humanist Alliance Philippines, International (HAPI) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) invite you to squat, lunge and collect trash at Metro Manila's only wetland and endangered bird sanctuary.

Join us on June 2, 2018, Saturday at 7:00 AM and be one with our Mother Nature on a treasure hunt like no other. This collective effort is open to all ages and genders. Only humanity can save humanity, so see you there!

IMPORTANT:
Minors and adults alike will have to sign a liability waiver before the program begins.

LOCATION:
Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) is a nature reserve of mangroves, ponds, lagoons, mudflats, salt marshes, and mixed beach forest. It covers around 175 hectares of wetland ecosystem, consisting of two islands — Freedom Island and Long Island. Also, it plays a critical role in the survival of 41 threatened, restricted-range and congregatory bird species from China, Japan and Siberia.

THINGS TO BRING:
  • Used flour or rice sack (plastic trash bags are prohibited by DENR)
  • Reusable or rubber gloves (optional but recommended)
  • Extra shirt, extra pants and extra footwear
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Reusable cups or tumblers (single-use cups are prohibited by DENR)
  • Packed meals or snacks

PROPER ATTIRE:
  • Dark-colored shirt, pants and shoes — Light-colored clothes and shoes don't look good when soiled.
  • Shirt, not tank top nor midriff — Sleeves cover your shoulders and arms against the rays of the sun.
  • Long pants, not shorts nor skirt — Long pants cover your legs against the rays of the sun.
  • Closed-toe shoes or running shoes — Terrain at the clean-up area can be sandy, rocky and uneven.
  • Cap, beach hat and bandana — Heat of the sun can cause headache and discomfort.
  • Face towel or handkerchief — Have something to wipe that grime off with.
PROVISIONS:
Distilled water stations and cabanas are available at the clean-up area to use during breaks. Chairs and toilets are set up at the starting point.

COMMUTING DIRECTIONS:
Take a Grab, regular taxi, jeepney or train to LRT1 Baclaran Station. From the station, take a jeepney bound for Kabihasnan and stop at Petron (Quirino Avenue corner Service Road) across 7-Eleven and Jollibee. From Petron, walk on Service Road towards the nearby toll gate. When at the toll gate, turn right to keep on walking on Service Road. In sight should be Manila-Cavite Expressway. Cross the footbridge to get to the other side of the Expressway, called Access Road. Walk on Access Road until you see a sign at your right, saying that you have reached LPPCHEA.

To get home from LPPCHEA, please reverse the commuting directions.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS:
Take Roxas Boulevard, NAIA Road or Seaside Drive to reach Manila-Cavite Expressway. Landmark in the area is the old Uniwide Coastal Mall, now South West Integrated Provincial Transport Terminal. Drive past Caltex and Parañaque River. After crossing over the river, enter Access Road. In sight should be Bulungan Seafood Market or Don Galo Parañaque's Fish Port. Keep on driving on Access Road until you see a sign saying that you have reached LPPCHEA. Park on the lot provided.

To get home from LPPCHEA, please exit via the same Access Road, make a U-Turn under the Expressway towards the Service Road on the other side. Drive straight ahead. When you reach a toll gate, pay the minimal fee and make another U-Turn towards the Expressway, northbound. From there, your routes vary depending on destination.

PROGRAM:
Volunteers must be at the location by 6:30 AM. This will allow us to start the program at 7:00 AM. The program will open with a brief introduction by HAPI, an environmental talk by an LPPCHEA worker, a safety tutorial on proper cleaning, distribution of cleaning tools, and designations to the clean-up area. Certificates of Participation will be awarded to all volunteers who could complete the program. Interviews, if any, will be taken after the program.

FREE PHOTOWALK:
You are invited to a free nature tour and bird-watching by LPPCHEA workers. Isn't it a good idea to see up close what you are trying to save?
