Volunteer Event
If you know Yawyan, Karate, Taekwondo or other marital arts, kick in your time with us this summer!
The Fairplay Center is currently expanding its program in sports. We believe that Martial Arts is a good venue for the youth to develop discipline, respect and physical fitness. Our vision is for these kids to be given the same opportunity to learn and explore things enjoyed by other kids like them. Self discovery and growth through martial arts would help support their full development. As Bruce Lee once said "Be like water..." adapting, flexible, never fixed and ever reaching potentials.
The Fairplay kids are very keen about learning martial arts and this they have proposed during our recent Community Meeting. You can help empower these kids reach their full potential as they pursue their interests this summer.
About Fairplay...
Fairplay runs a drop-in centre which allows us to formally assess the situation of the children and their families. This helps us provide individual support for the kids, helping to identify who benefits most from an education sponsorship, who really needs full-time residential care, and who needs support in livelihood projects. This is the base of our social work. The drop-in centre acts as a halfway house for many children. For some it's the necessary step before they can competently go back to full-time education, for others it's the next step in finding a loving home.
Fairplay is currently expanding its education programs. We aim to provide full-time education for children working as scavengers and other kids who couldn’t afford to go to school. We also aim at harnessing social and emotional skills of these children so they can be responsible and compassionate individuals in their community. This is made possible in a democratic setting where kids have the freedom and control over their learning. Locally, schools typically have 60-80 kids in a classroom, outdated materials, and over-worked teachers. Fairplay aims at providing a happier, more effective learning environment that will show how much can be achieved with alternative education. We generally aim at developing self-regulated, responsible, caring and creative lifelong learners.
